Aspects of Totalitarianism in the Characters of This Perfect Day Novel
ABSTRACT

This study is aimed to identify aspects of totalitarianism depicted in the characters of Ira Levin’s This Perfect Day Novel and analyzes how the major character is affected by totalitarianism. To conduct this research, the researcher used a qualitative method and content analysis approach. The data source of this research was This Perfect Day novel written by Ira Levin. The data were taken in the forms of words, sentences, clauses, phrases, and narration that are related to aspects of totalitarianism experienced by the characters in the novel. As analyzed, the results showed how aspects of totalitarianism were depicted in the characters of the novel. The findings were categorized into 6 categories based on Friedrich and Brzezinski’s theory of totalitarianism. They consist of: An ideology, a single group, a mass organization or party, a system of terror, a monopoly over media and technology, a monopoly over weapons and military, and a central power over the economy. The thesis’s results show how the impact of totalitarianism in the characters affects them mostly negative, especially the main character, Chip. The analysis reveals how the antagonist of the novel, Wei and his organization, UniComp shape the novel’s world and brainwashed its population to obey them only. The whole world of the novel is like a prison where everyone is watched and tracked by the supercomputerr made by UniComp’s High Council.

ABSTRACT

Penelitian ini bertujuan untuk mengidentifikasi aspek totalitarianisme yang tergambar dalam tokoh-tokoh dalam This Perfect Day Novel karya Ira Levin dan menganalisis bagaimana tokoh utama dipengaruhi oleh totalitarianisme. Untuk melakukan penelitian ini, peneliti menggunakan metode kualitatif dan pendekatan konten analisis. Sumber data penelitian ini adalah novel This Perfect Day karya Ira Levin. Data diambil berupa kata, kalimat, klausa, frasa, dan narasi yang berkaitan dengan aspek totalitarianisme yang dialami oleh tokoh-tokoh dalam novel. Jika dianalisis, hasilnya menunjukkan bagaimana aspek totalitarianisme digambarkan dalam karakter novel. Temuan tersebut kemudian dikategorikan ke dalam 6 kategori berdasarkan teori totalitarianisme Friedrich dan Brzezinski. Mereka terdiri dari: An ideology, a single group, a mass organization or party, a system of terror, a monopoly over media and technology, a monopoly over weapons and military, and a central power over the economy. Hasil tesis menunjukkan bagaimana dampak totalitarianisme pada tokoh-tokoh tersebut sebagian besar berdampak negatif, terutama pada tokoh utama, Chip. Analisis mengungkapkan bagaimana antagonis novel, Wei dan organisasinya, UniComp membentuk dunia novel dan mencuci otak penduduknya untuk mematuhi mereka saja. Seluruh dunia novel itu seperti penjara di mana setiap orang diawasi dan dilacak oleh superkomputer yang dibuat oleh Dewan Tinggi UniComp.
