Deconstruction of Male Domination in Maleficent Movie Directed by Robert Stromberg
ABSTRACT
This study concerned on deconstruction of Male Domination in Maleficent movie. The objectives of the study are to investigate further of male domination which is represented and to find out how male domination is deconstructed in Maleficent movie. The researcher used deconstruction theory by Jacques Derrida to answer the research questions. To analysis the study, the researcher used qualitative as the method to analyze the deconstruction of male domination. The source of data of this study is Maleficent movie, and the forms of the data were the dialogue, narration and acts performed by the characters in the movie. The researcher found the representation of male domination. Those are: men have power, kingdom is led by king, and the existence of true love kiss. The findings showed that there were three binary oppositions that can be deconstructed. There are between man and woman, king and queen, true love kiss. This study showed that with deconstruction, researchers acquired deeper understanding about patriarchal system and the works of male domination. This study does not mean to claim that woman should become more dominant than man, but researcher wants to show to the reader the possibilities that man and woman are born equal.
