Liberal Feminist on Ophelia and Gertrude Character in Shakespeare's Hamlet Drama
ABSTRACT
This study aimed to analyze how the liberal feminist actions described by Ophelia and Gertrude in Shakespeare’s Hamlet drama and to identify the factors that were drove the female characters so that they performed the actions. To conduct this research, the researcher used a qualitative method and a feminist approach. The data source of this research was the Hamlet drama script that was written by William Shakespeare. The data were taken in the form of dialogues that are related to behavioral actions related to liberal feminists and the factors that drove the two female characters. In conducting this research, the researcher used the theory of liberal feminist by Tong and the theory of patriarchy by Madsen. The findings of this research showed that there were two types of liberal feminists portrayed in the drama; they were politic which refer to the ownership of the right to choose without the influence of others and emphasized freedom which refer to the same freedom as men, they could do everything that men want, they could express themselves without restrictions in society. The finding also showed the factors that influences the characters of being a liberal feminist, which are inferior, oppressed, restricted, manipulated, exploited, passive (affectionate, obedient, responsive, kind) and active men (aggressive, curious, ambitious, and responsible).
