Magical Realism in Neil Gaiman's The Ocean at the End of the Lane Novel
ABSTRACT
This research discusses about magical realism in Neil Gaiman’s The Ocean at the End of the Lane novel. This research uses theories such as characteristics of magical realism by Wendy B. Faris and literary techniques and role of magical realism by Anne C. Hegerfeldt to analyze the novel. The method of this research is descriptive qualitative and the approach is post-structuralism. The results of this study showed that the phenomena in the narrator/protagonist’s life like the Hempstocks, Ursula Monkton, Lettie’s ocean, and the hunger birds are presented as magical realism based on characteristics of magical realism. The results also showed that literary techniques of magical realism are represented within the novel and also relate to the presentation of magical phenomena like the Hempstocks, Ursula Monkton, Lettie’s ocean, and the hunger birds. The role of magical realism that is portrayed in the novel showed the different construction of the world between children and adults through the influence of magical phenomena, like the presence of Ursula Monkton and Lettie’s ocean in narrator/protagonist’s life.
