Code Switching and Code Mixing on China Rich Girlfiend Novel by Kevin Kwan
ABSTRACT
This study is focused on the femininity characteristics in Dante’s character and the development of his identity. Dante is one of the main characters in Aristotle and Dante Discover the Secret of Universe novel. The novel tells about the journey of Dante and his best friend, two young teenagers, to figure out and accept their identity. By using descriptive qualitative method, this study aimed to answer the following questions. The first research question is what are the characteristics of femininity portrayed in Dante character and the second research question is what are the identity developments of homosexuality depicted in character of Dante. The result of the analysis using Bem theory showed that Dante matches 16 out of 20 femininity characteristics which are affectionate, cheerful, childlike, compassionate, eager to soothe hurt feelings, feminine, gentle, gullible, sensitive of the needs of others, loyal, soft spoken, sympathetic, tender, understanding, warm, and yielding. The result of the second question using Cass’ identity development showed that Dante matches 4 out of 6 identity development stages as a homosexual which are identity of confusion, comparison, tolerance and acceptance. Dante’s identity is developed from the stage which he confused about his identity, the feeling of alienation, acceptance and until he fully embraces his identity and start to open up to his close relatives. Based on the answers of research questions, it can be concluded that Dante possessed femininity characteristics and he developed his identity through some stages before he fully embraced his identity as a homosexual.
