The Woman Oppression in Fifty Shades of Grey Novel
ABSTRACT
Oppression is the inequitable use of authority, law, or physical force to prevent others from being free or equal. Feminists fight against the oppression of women. Women have been unjustly held back from achieving full equality for much of human history in many societies around the world. This research concerned about the oppression of the female character Anastasia Steele in James’s Fifty Shades of Grey novel using Iris Marion Young’s Five Faces of Oppression theory. Young’s theory of oppression was utilized in order to analyze further kinds of oppression that Anastasia had to go through. The researcher used descriptive qualitative method to analyze and classify what kind of oppression that Anastasia got from Christian. Also to analyze how the female character reaction towards oppression that she got from the male character. The data that the researcher uses were obtained from Fifty Shades of Grey novel. The researcher used a close reading process to do the data collection technique and classify the data into Young’s five faces of oppression (exploitation, marginalization, powerlessness, cultural imperialism and violence). The researcher found that Anastasia got four of the five the faces of oppression. She got oppressed in their relationship by the male character in order to please him all the time he wanted. The researcher also found the reaction of Anastasia while being oppressed by Christian. She battled with her subconscious, whether this relationship deserves to be maintained or not.
