Emotion of Dominance Depicted by Amy Elliot Dunne of Gone Girl Film
ABSTRACT
To give understanding to the public about some topics in the most subtle way, activists and writers usually deliver them through literature. It is no different for feminists that fight for women’s rights in the society to create a lot of female characters to enliven the feminism. However, the female characters mostly fall into the same pattern of characterization whether they are innately good or strong to be categorized as a feminist character that breaks boundaries. It comes differently with the fictional character Amy that was created by Gillian Flynn. Flynn thought by adding a female villain with complex characterization and motives to the literary work means that she is contributing the diversity of female characters just like how diverse male characters are in literature. Moreover, there are very few female characters in literature that can project masculinity such as dominant and also comply the ideal characteristics for woman that is able to erase the oppressions according to radical libertarian feminism. Yet, the character of Amy notoriously projects both of the matters.
This research focuses on analyzing the character of Amy in the Gone Girl film which reveals the journey of Amy’s life which exposes her dominance emotion and her respected background of life. The result of the analysis using Marston D.I.S.C. theory and radical libertarian feminism theory reveals that her character is indeed showing emotion of dominance that makes her as an androgyny to overcome her bad experiences. The character of Amy is also invented as a big manifest to feminism, as mostly all part of her characteristics fulfill the ideal characteristics for woman according to radical libertarian feminists. Amy indeed presents a woman who no longer became the inferior group in the society and can be free in the male-ruled realm by having status, education, and money. However, the researcher came to the conclusion that she does not fit to be a role model from radical libertarian feminism as she originally created as a villain character of the film that she presented her bad behavior at some point through the film.
Key words: female masculinity, trait of dominance, Marston’s D.I.S.C. theory, radical libertarian feminism, androgyny, Gone Girl.
