The Radical Feminism of Imperator Furiosa’s Character in Mad Max Fury Road Film (2015)

ABSTRACT

The words feminism and feminist are used today throughout the Western
world to connote the ideas that advocate the emancipation of women, the
movements that have attempted to realize it, and the individuals who support
these goals. Radical Feminism is one of the feminist thoughts. It is the belief that
insisted that men’s control of both, women sexual and reproductive lives and
women’s self-identity, self-respect, and self-esteem is the most fundamental of all
the oppressions human beings visit on each other. There are two kinds of radical
feminism, first radical libertarian feminism which are androgyny and seizing the
meaning of reproduction. Second is radical cultural feminism which is women
using reproduction as trump card and power. The two kinds of radical feminism
are found in Furiosa’s character in Mad Max Fury Road film (2015).
The purpose of this research was to find out how imperator Furiosa
character was represented in radical feminism in Mad Max Fury Road film
(2015). The design of this research was a qualitative research. The data of this
research were the dialogue, scene, action, speech and picture based on the film.
There were two data sources, the Mad Max Fury Road film (2015), and the script
of film itself. The data of this research were analyzed by using radical feminism
theory based on Rosemarie. P. Tong in Feminist Thought a More Comprehensive
Introduction (2009) and the categorized as Furiosa’s character representation of
radical feminism through Kelly Griffith theory of indirect characterization. The
result of this research showed Imperator Furiosa represented two kinds of radical
feminism. First was radical libertarian feminism which were first androgyny
which found in the Furiosa’ character appearance, character dialogue, character
speech, character action. And seize the meaning of reproduction which found in
the Furiosa’s character dialogue. Second was radical cultural feminism which is
women using reproduction as trump card and power which found in the Furiosa’s
character speech.
