Peter’s Psychosocial Development in Prodigal Son Novel by Danielle Steel
ABSTRACT
Erik Erikson’s psychosocial theory revolutionized developmental thought Hoare. He was
one of the first to propose a life-span model of human development which included eight
successive psychosocial stages. Each stage is associated with an inherent conflict or crisis that the
individual must encounter and successfully resolve to term crisis “in a developmental sense to
connote not a threat of catastrophe, but a turning point, a crucial period of increased vulnerability
and heightened potential” (Hoare 96). The stage consist of infancy, early childhood, play age,
school age, adolesence, young adult, middle adult, and maturity. In this research the researcher has
found three stages that appeared in Peter and explained in the novel Prodigal Son by Danielle
Steele.
This research purpose is to find out Peter’s Psychosocial Development stages in the novel
Prodigal Son by Danielle Steele. This research design of this research is qualitative research. The
data of this research is taken from the novel itself. The data then categorized by the Erikson’s
theory in order to found out which one the related with the stages of psychosocial. The data was
analyzed by this theory and the researcher managed to found three stages of psychosocial stages
that appeared in Peter, which are school age, young adulthood, and middle adult in Peter as the
result of this research.
