Heroic Journey of the Main Character of Maleficent Movie

ABSTRACT

This research is intended to analyze Maleficent’s journey based on stages in
Monomyth theory by Joseph Campbell and also to identify the characteristic of
Maleficent as a main character of Maleficent movie. The purposes of this research
were: to find out patterns of hero’s journey that happened in Maleficent as a hero
as seen in the movie, and to find out about Maleficent’s character based on her
journey.
This research used descriptive qualitative research because the data were
shown in words. Maleficent movie was used in this research as the data source. The
data consisted of dialogues, actions, and scenes that showed Maleficent’s journey
and character.
The results of the research showed some analysis as follows. First, all stages
in Monomyth theory by Joseph Campbell were passed by Maleficent and the sub
stages in each stage Maleficent only passed fifteen out of seventeen sub stages. The
refusal of the return and the magic flight sub stages were not passed by Maleficent
because she did not refuse to come back to her ordinary life and she had her own
power since she was a kid. Maleficent showed several characteristics of a hero
according to her journey that was investigated with Monomyth theory and hero’s
characteristic theory. The characteristics of hero was shown by Maleficent through
her skill in using of her power, her sacrifice to help or for well-being of others, her
courage to face all problems and situation.
