Patriarchy in Percy Jackson and the Olympians; The Lightning Thief Novel
ABSTRACT
The objective of this study was to identify the way patriarchy portrayed in Riordan’s
Percy Jackson and the Olympians; The Lightning Thief novel. This study was a
qualitative research which used data in the form of words taken from a novel. The
researcher used Johnson’s patriarchy theory in completing the objective of this study.
Moreover, this study was a part of literature research due to the fact of focusing the subject
of the research on the female characters of the novel. This directly meant that this study
analysed an intrinsic element of a novel (characters) and that the characters itself were
not a real human being, merely as the representation of the real ones.
The result showed the potrayal of patriarchy in Riordan’s Percy Jackson and the
Olympians; The Lightning Thief novel happened in the existence of the three kinds of
patriarchal system: male dominance, male identified, and male centered. The male
dominance system was indicated by the higher position achieved in most of male
characters of the novel. Comparing with the female characters that were portrayed as the
male’s supporters even though they were strong, smart, and skillful as well as the male
characters. The male identified was shown by depicting his (Riordan) female characters
as being vulnerable both physically and mentally, while his male characters were defined
as the goodness-in-god could be. Lastly, the male centered was identified by the society
existed in the novel which based on the male’s perspective.
