Character Analysis of Jace Wayland in The Mortal Instruments: City of Bones Novel through Hierarchy of Human Needs Theory of Abraham Maslow
ABSTRACT
This research is related to Abraham Maslow’s theory about physiological need,
safety need, love and belongingness need, esteem need, and self-actualization need. This
research analyzed the character named Jace in The Mortal Instruments: City of Bones
novel by using the theory of Maslow that will showed the need of Jace in the novel The
Mortal Instruments: City of Bones by Cassandra Clare. This novel told about Clary and
Jace who were trying to find the Mortal cup to save Clary’s mother. The purposes of this
research were to find out about how Jace could fulfill his need based on the theory of
Abraham Maslow and to find out about his character during his journey based on his
needs. This data used descriptive research because the data were found in the form of
dialogue and narration that will explained about the character. The steps of data collection
were reading the novel The Mortal Instruments: City of Bones and understanding about
the dialogue and narration that had been shown, then identified the data based on the
theory of human needs. Last, the data were arranged based on the research questions. For
making the data more valid, the researcher used data triangulation and theoretical
triangulation. Meanwhile in data analysis, the researcher provided the analysis in three
step, they were data reduction, data display, and drawing conclusion.
The character from The Mortal Instrument: City of Bones novel, Jace could fulfill
all of needs except the last stage of self-actualization need. Jace easily fulfilled the needs
with the help from his friends. Based on each need it could show Jace’s character and the
most dominant is lovable. He showed many characters. He felt comfortable with someone
that he already know than a new people. He could be sarcastic to people that he did not
like. It explained that his character is round.
