An Analysis of Liberal Feminism Vakues in Katherine Watson's Character in Minalisa Slime Filem (2003)
ABSTRACT
Feminism is an ideology or an understanding that expresses equal rights
between men and women. One of the branches of feminism is liberal feminism.
Liberal feminism is one of the theories that places women with full and individual
freedom. Liberal feminism is characterized by a struggle of woman as an
individual about equality. Liberal feminism focuses on the individual freedom of
women. The values of liberal feminism can be found in the character of Katherine
Watson in Monalisa Smile film.
The purposes of this study were to identify the characters of Katherine
Watson in Monalisa Smile film and to analyze the liberal feminism values that are
depicted in Katherine Watson’s character in the film. The data of this study are
collected from Mike Newell’s Monalisa Smile (2003) film. Liberal feminism
theory by Rosemary Tong was used as the main theory to find out and examine
the liberal feminism values of Katherine Watson in Monalisa Smile film. The
values of liberal feminism that are asserted by Tong are equal in education, liberty
and suffrage, and also opportunity and rights. As the object, Katherine Watson
was analyzed through her characters. Then, by looking at the characters, the
liberal feminism values of Katherine Watson is reflected.
The result of this research showed that the characters of Katherine Watson
were subversive, ambitious, assertive, progressive, independent, intelligent, polite,
beautiful, fabulous. From nine characters of Katherine Watson that is found, there
are several characters that reflected liberal feminism values. The characters of
Katherine Wason that are intelligent, progressive, and polite make Katherine
Watson has an equality in education. Independent, ambitious, assertive,
subversive, and progressive characters of Katherine Watson shows that she is
equal in liberty and suffrage. Besides depicting equal liberty and suffrage, the
independent and ambitious characters of Katherine Watson also depict the equal
rights and opportunity. Thus, based on the characters of Katherine Watson, the
liberal feminism values that are found in this thesis are equal education, equal
liberty and suffrage, and equal opportunity and rights.
