Racial Identity of Irene and Clare Passing

ABSTRACT

The aim of this study was to find out or shows how the process to become a black and
also this is to show how environment also can determine race of someone and it can happens
anytime. Because someone can aware about her/ his own race when they can gather and make
her or his decision by their selves.The approach of this study was qualitative. Nigresence
theory was used as the theory of processing to become a black. The result of this study was
the first character named Irene did not do the passing, even though she was born as the mixed
race, she keep her race a black. Different from Irene, the another character named Clare was
passing as white to get a better life with married to a white racist white man. Her husband did
not even know that she is black because her husband thinks she has as white as lily skin.But
after her encounter with Irene she became dilemma between keep her passing as white or
back to her race which is black.
Also, after her encounter with Irene, she always join the black community activity. In
the end, when she was join the black community, her husband came to there and she was
surprised and fall from the window. So no one knew where Clare go and also no one know
that she is keep her passing as white or back to her race as black people. In this study, the
researcher used the theory of becoming black or nigresence theory by William Cross Jr. Also
the researcher used the novel as the data source.
