Masculinity in Brave Film (2012)
ABSTRACT
Stereotype of women stayed since long time ago make women need to follow the
stereotype of women that should be feminine. Feminine traits are usually portrayed in Princess.
Princess usually had feminine traits like weak, depend to men, lovely, caring and have beautiful
appearance. In Brave Film, Princess Merida refuse in getting married, and showing her capable to
have right choosing what she wanted to be. Princess portrays as free-spirit princess that not show
feminine traits like other princes as in Brave Film.
This research intended to analyze Princess Merida masculinity traits and her character
development through her masculinity traits. The data of this research are in written form taken
from the dialogue, narration and figures of expression from Brave Film (2012). This study uses
Sex Role Inventory from Sandra Bem to find the masculinity traits and character development in
Princess Merida as the main object of this research.
There are two results of this research. The first result shows that Princess Merida as the
main character of Brave Film has masculinity traits beside her status and appearance as a Princess.
There are 11 masculinity traits in Princess Merida. They are Brave, Willing to take a risk, Self-
Sufficient, Athletic, Force, Willing to take a stand, Act as a Leader, Optimistic, Individual, Defend
Own Belief, and Easy to make decision. The second shows her character development through her
masculinity traits shown in Brave Film. There are 5 character development that shows through
Princess Merida masculinity traits. They are Gullible to Defend Own Belief, Feminine to Force,
Childish to Act as Leader and Self-Sufficient, Diffident to Brave and Athletic, and Gentle/Graceful
to Individual. Masculinity traits in Princess Merida finally break the old image of a Princess or a
woman who should be feminine and always have romance as the ending of story.
The next researcher could analyze deeper about masculinity or they can find another
character that will be interest to be analyze. This research hoped to be a good reference and prove
that people need to judge a person not from their gender or sex. But, people need to judges a person
from their capability and quality as human.
