Adaptation of Angel and Demon Characters in Supernatural TV

ABSTRACT

The image of angel and demon has been used in many literary works. The
purposes of this research are to see the development of angel and demon
characters from their original to the Supernatural TV Series and to see the reason
behind it. This research is categorized as a qualitative research. Book of Enoch I
and King James bible are used as the reference for the characters named Azazel
and Michael. In addition, Matt Cardin’s and David Schweitzr’s definitions of
angels and demons are used as the reference for the characters named Castiel and
Crowley. Meanwhile Linda Hutcheon’s adaptation theory is used to analyze the
reason behind the angel and demon adaptation in Supernatural TV series and Paul
Fussel’s American Status Sytem theory is used as the supporting theory.
The first result of the study shows that there are transformation in the
depiction of angels and demons in the original work and in Supernatural TV
Series. The angel character, Michael, appears as archangel both in biblical
narration and Supernatural TV series, the character however acting mostly as a
malevolent force in the TV show. Castiel, as the angel from the TV Series acting
as the messenger of God, terrifying warrior of God that brought destruction, angel
who has system of hierarchy, a free spirit that can be tainted by earthly desire and
as human with wings based on general description by Cardin’s. the demon
characters, Azazel appears as the Father of All Sin in Enoch I and as the Yellow
Eyed Demon in Supernatural TV series. Crowley with his long screening time has
two functions as a demon and devil. The second result of the study shows that the
reason why Supernatural adapted angelic and demonic character is because of the
adapter’s personal motives to create a show according to his vision of American
people. This claim is supported by the Paul Fussell’s theory of American Status
System which some of the nine classes are reflected by the four characters.
