Code-switching and Code-mixing Used by Boy William and Sheryl Sheinafia in "Breakout" TV Show
ABSTRACT
Several TV shows in Indonesia contain many uses of English that felt more
attractive and interesting for the audiences. Whatever the objectives, and in spite of
the good and bad effects, it contributed in adding the practice of code-switching and
code-mixing. Most of the presenters were native speaker of Bahasa where English
still remained as a foreign language, so there would be a mutual use of those two
languages. The aim of this research is to find out what types of code switching and
code-mixing of Breakout TV based on Hoffman types of code-switching (1991)
and Muysken's types of code-mixing (2000). Besides, it is also to find out how are
the viewers attitude toward that code-switching and code-mixing. The data of this
research is code-switching and code-mixing found in the "Lagu Rekor" episode and
the result of the interview done with the viewers.
The result of the research showed that all the types of the code-switching
suggested by Hoffman (1991) were found in “Lagu Rekor” Breakout TV Show.
Inter-sentential and emblematic tag switching were the most dominant types where
there were fifteen occurences of both types in that episode. The result also showed
that there were twelve insertion code-switching, which was also the most frequent
type of code-mixing found. The analysis sets out only one alternation, and two
congruent lexicalizations. Based on the interview, the viewers of Breakout TV
Show supported the use of the code-switching and code-mixing is because of it was
easy to understand as well as giving them benefits like vocabularies, intonation,
pronunciation, listening, motivation to speak English.
