Women and Oppression: An Insight into Female Characters in Lolita Novel by Vladimir Nabokov
ABSTRACT
This study analyzed the controversial novel of Vladimir Nabokov entitled Lolita
as the main object. In this study, the researcher analyzed the oppression which was
experienced by the female characters who had a close relationship with Humbert. They are
Annabel, Monique, Valeria, Charlotte Haze, Dolores Haze, and Rita. The purpose of this
study is to reveal and also explain the forms of oppression that the female characters
experience in the Lolita novel.
The Five Faces of Oppression is a theory from Iris Marion Young. The theory is
related toward the form of oppression that usually occurs in the society. The oppression
itself is an injustice act from one person to the other one caused by race, class, gender,
cultural concept, and preference. The five faces of oppression based on Young‘s theory are
exploitation, marginalization, powerlessness, cultural imperialism, and violence.
The findings revealed that there were five forms of oppression found during the
process of analysis. The forms of oppression are exploitation, marginalization,
powerlessness, cultural imperialism, and violence. Annabel and Rita are two female
characters that Humbert did not oppress at all. The oppressions are mostly found in
Humbert‘s thoughts, actions, and deeds that triggered him to oppress the female characters.
Based on the analysis, it can be concluded that the oppression could happen
because of the situation where one is dominant than the others and also the oppression
could also happen because of the preference that someone has toward the others.
