Deviance Behavior of Equality 7-2521 Affected by Social Structure in Anthem by Rand

ABSTRACT

Deviance behavior is considered as phenomena that occurred in the social life. Social
life has pattern which is made by social structure that could not be transgressed by all
people in society. Equality 7-2521 as the main character in Anthem novel lives in a
society who has many rules and laws that must be followed by all people in there. He
tries to follow all rules and laws that are applied by society around him but finally he
was failed to make his adaption. This study tries to identify social structure and
deviance behavior of Equality 7-2521 that appeared in Anthem novel. Theory social
structure by Talcott Parsons is used to analyze data which relate with social structure
in the novel.in other hand, data which relate with deviance behavior of Equality 7- 2521 were analyzed by using deviance theory by Robert King Merthon. There are
two results of this study, first the type of social structure appeared in Anthem novel is
only two from four types that mentioned by Talcott Parsons in his theory. Both are
social cohesion and equilibrium. Second, social cohesion affects Equality 7-2521 to
commit deviance behavior throughout the rules and laws that are applied by society
around him. Equilibrium affects Equality 7-2521 to commit deviance behavior
throughout people’s reactions toward him which push him to be a transgressor. There
are five types of deviance behavior of Equality 7-2521 that appeared in the novel,
they are conformity, ritualism, retreatism, innovation and rebellion.
