The Influences of People of Color Racial Identity to African-American Women‟s Behaviors inNella Larsen‟s Passing
ABSTRACT
This study aimed to discuss about passing in American life in the late 18th and
early 19th century. As in passing which related to racial identity, the women author
interpreted her social life in her work, including Nella Larsen. The works of Nella Larsen
generally relates with racial issues such as racial identity and passing issue. This study
examined the influences of people of color racial identity to African American women‟s
behavior as seen in Nella Larsen‟s novel, Passing, through the representation of African
American characters.
This study used People of Color Racial Identity theory and related with theory of
Multidimensional Model of Racial Identity in analyzing the influences racial identity to
behavior.
The results of the study show that the racial identity that are appeared in the Irene
character are conformity, dissonance, immersion/emersion, internalization and integrative
awareness. On Clare character appears conformity and dissonance status. The study also
was identified for finding the influences of racial identity to Irene and Clare‟s behavior.
Racial centrality, racial salience, racial regard and racial ideology are racial identity
dimensions that influence Irene and Clare‟s behavior.
