Social Processes in the Formation of Dre Parker’s Character in Karate Kid film 2010
ABSTRACT
In this study, the researchers analyzed the social process of the Dre character in
the Karate Kid film 2010. The researcher only discussed the character of Dre Parker,
who gets the character formation from his neighborhood. To be able to see the
formation of character, researcher wanted to prove that social processes and necessities
of life can also shape or change a person's character. There are two objectives of
research in this study, such as, to show the character formation that occurred in the
character of Dre in Karate Kid film 2010, and to analyze how Dre experienced character
changes shaped by social processes in Karate Kid film 2010. The social process is the theory described by Panos D bardis. This theory is
related to the formation of characters that usually occur in society. The formation of this
character is somehow referred to social process attached to people or groups for several
reasons, such as, class, religion and culture. In the social process there are two
classification, first is associative social process, in associative social process such as;
cooperation (team work), accommodation (agreement), assimilation (cultural fusion).
The second classification of social process is dissociative social process, in dissociative
social process such as; competition (compete in a good way), conflict (compete in a bad
way).
The research results that Dre experiences character formation through all
elements of social process. While the factors that can change the individual character, one of them is a factor of need, basic needs (physiological needs), needs sense of
security (safety needs), needs a sense of being loved (belongingness and love needs),
needs to feel appreciated (esteem needs), the need to achieve the goal (self actualization
needs). Then the social process that Dre got in the form of cooperation is with his
mother and Mr. Han, an agreement made with Mr.Li and his student, the cultural fusion
gained from the environment.
Based on the research analysis, the researcher concluded that the character
formation of the Dre is achieved from the new environment in which he lives.
Therefore, researcher believed that the formation of character in individuals is not
always caused by the environment, but character formation can occur because of the
necessities of life that must be fulfilled by the individual.
Keywords: individual, character formation, social process, hierarchy needs.
