Love and Belongings Needs Represented by Twin Character in The Thirteenth Tale Nove

ABSTRACT

This research aimed to find out the twin character in The Thirteenth Tale Novel,
Adeline March and Emmeline March’s character based on Maslow’s Hierarchy of Human
Needs Love and Belongings. The researcher discussed the twins’ character before they are
separated, during the separation period, and after they reunite based on their love and
belongings needs. The researcher also identified the problem of the twins’ love and
belongings needs in the twins’ separation period which caused the different development of
the needs fulfillment.
People who are hungry for love, affectionate, and intimacy, are actually trying to
satisfy one of hierarchy of human needs, love and belongings needs, after they successfully
satisfy physiological needs and safety needs. And if people want to fulfill love and
belongings needs, they have to find one person or people who can share love to them and
have a frequent and stable interaction. Due to several reasons, both Adeline and Emmeline
are separated which lead to the interrupted fulfillment of love and belongings needs.
Therefore the unsatisfied needs induce to the twins’ character.
This research applied content analysis research design, which involved a process
designed to condensed raw data from the novel into categories or themes in which
represented the description of love and belongings needs of the twins. Then, the researcher
made interpretation based on Abraham Maslow’s Hierarchy of Human Needs’ theory
which could be a meaning derived from a comparison of the findings with information
gathered from the literature or theories.
The result showed that Adeline and Emmeline could satisfy the love and belongings
needs and have the stable interaction and close relationship before the separation. However,
during the separation, their love and belongings needs are interrupted and it causes
alteration on their character. In addition, when they finally reunite, Adeline and Emmeline
experience different development of the love and belongings needs fulfillment. Adeline is
being harsher and Emmeline grows ignorance and independence towards Adeline. Thus,
people who are unable to satisfy one of the hierarchy of needs will be having
transformation of their character.
