A Sociolinguistic Analysis of Taboo Words in The Big Wedding Movie
ABSTRACT
The aim of this research was to find out taboo words uttered by characters
in The Big Wedding movie using sociolinguistic approach. The objectives of this
research were to identify the types and the functions of taboo words uttered by
characters in the movie. This research belongs to qualitative research employing
content analysis approach that focused on textual investigation. The source of the
data was the movie script of The Big Wedding movie. The data were in the form
of utterances, while the contexts of the utterances became supported data to
analyze taboo words. The data were collected by reading the movie script after
watching the movie and re-watching to check the accuracy of the movie script.
Then, the last step was taking some important notes to identify the types by using
Mercury‟s theory (1995) and the functions of taboo words by using Jay‟s theory
(1999).
The results of this research are stated as follows. Firstly, six types of taboo
words were found in the characters‟ utterances in The Big Wedding movie. They
were cursing, profanity, blasphemy, obscenity, vulgarism, and expletive. 49 data
were found in the movie. Profanity has the biggest number of occurrence. The
word hell becomes the most dominant word that was uttered by the characters in
the movie. The smallest number of taboo words‟ type is blasphemy. Blasphemy
became the least to occur in the movie because blasphemy is the most dangerous
word to use in daily conversation. Secondly, three functions of taboo words were
found in the movie; humorous, catharsis and to show power. Humorous becomes
the most appeared function because the theme of this movie was comedy romantic
so that all characters often used taboo words to make a joke. The least function
that was found in this movie is to show power because this movie is not
concerned in showing power to someone.
