Masculinity Traits of Maud Watts as a Female Character in the Suffragette Film

ABSTRACT

Masculinity and femininity are gender roles which are created by society. Ideally, a female character depicted femininity traits in her character. Yet, the
existence of masculinity traits in a female character is not impossible. Maud Watts
is a female character in the Suf ragette film who became the object of this
research. The purposes of this research are to reveal how a female character like
Maud Watts is depicted in the film and to prove that a female character is also
adopted masculinity traits inside herself. In order to reveal the depiction of
Maud’s character in the film, the researcher used the theory of characterization by
Boggs and Petrie. Next, to prove that Maud Watts is adopted masculinity traits, the researcher used the theory of Bem Sex Role Inventory by Sandra L. Bem. This
research is conducted as a qualitative content analysis and it adopts the technique
of coding categories, which is developed by Frankel and Wallen. The findings of this research reveal that as a female character, Maud Watts
is not only depicted femininity traits but also masculinity traits. Maud’s character
is depicted through the five tools of characterization according to Boggs and
Petrie. Through her appearances, Maud’s character is depicted as masculine and
likeable. Through the dialogues, Maud’s character is depicted as independent, confident, ambitious, assertive, competitive, sympathetic and loyal. Through her
external action, Maud’s character is depicted as ambitious, sympathetic, aggressive and loyal. Through her internal actions, Maud’s character is depicted
as sensitive and independent. And, through reactions of other characters, Maud’s
character is depicted as smart, aggressive and ambitious. Furthermore, according
to the theory of Bem Sex Role Inventory by Sandra L. Bem, the kinds of
masculinity traits which are adopted by Maud Watts are masculine, ambitious, acts as a leader, has leadership ability, aggressive, assertive, competitive, defends
own beliefs, independent, makes decisions easily, self-reliant, willing to take a
