Politeness Strategy Used by Lucy Honeychurch in A Novel entitled A Room with A View
ABSTRACT
Politeness is important thing that people must know when they communicate with
others and make a polite conversation. Politeness strategies are used to formulate message
in order to save hearer’s face when face threatening acts are desired. Brown and Levinson
state four main types of politeness strategy; bald-on record, positive politeness, negative
politeness, and off record. This research is intended to analyze politeness strategy that used
by Lucy Honeychurch in A Room with A View novel.
There are two problems that is discussed in this research. They are the types of
politeness strategies that were addressed by Lucy to her participants and the factors that
support her to choose specific strategy. This research used two theories to accomplish this
analysis. First is Brown and Levinson’s theory of politeness strategy and Hymes’ category
of context to know the context of Lucy’s utterances. This research applied descriptive
qualitative research method in order to get a picture how Lucy produces some utterances
that reflecting politeness strategy. The researcher served the data in dialogues that was
conducted by Lucy.
The result of this analysis showed that Lucy used all types of politeness strategy.
They are bald on record, positive politeness, negative politeness, and off record. From these
four types, bald-on record and positive politeness are the kind of politeness strategies that
mostly used by Lucy Honeychurch and researcher indicated her as an open-minded person
based on the data were found. And the uses of two strategies were influenced by the social
distance, relative power, and rank of imposition between Lucy and her participant.
