Rejective Behavior Towards Black People Characters In Antebellum Film

This research aims to find out the types of rejective behaviors represented in the film and analyze the responses that the black people characters did toward the act of rejective behaviors to understand the meaning and situation to the narrative elements in the film. Allport’s theory of rejective behaviors is applied to see how the act of racism was represented in the film entitled Antebellum. This research shows there were five types of rejective behaviors, but Allport simplified it into three types including verbal rejection, discrimination, and physical attack. Additionally, this research described the responses to rejective behaviors portrayed by Black people characters after experiencing those behaviors. There were twelve types of responses toward rejective behaviors, such as obsessive concern, denial of membership, withdrawal and passivity, clowning, slyness and cunning, self-hate, aggression toward own-group, prejudice against out-group, sympathy, fighting-back, enhanced striving, and symbolic status striving. Moreover, the analysis of the responses is also supported with the characterization theory by Petrie and Boggs. There were eight methods of characterization, such as appearance, dialogue, external action, internal action, reaction of other characters, contrast, caricature and leitmotif, and lastly through the choice of name as it was continued with a mimetic approach since characters in the film represented the real-life situation. Within the analysis, all types of rejective behaviors toward the black people characters were found in the analysis. There were four out of twelve responses that were found, and for the characterization methods only four were used.

Mencari tahu jenis-jenis perilaku penolakan yang diwakili dalam film dan menganalisis respons yang dilakukan karakter orang kulit hitam terhadap tindakan perilaku tolak untuk memahami makna dan situasi terhadap elemen naratif dalam film. Film ini mewakili rasisme dan semua jenis perilaku penolakan digunakan untuk menyebarkan kesadaran tentang masalah dan teori perilaku penolakan dan tanggapannya. Teori perilaku penolakan Allport diterapkan untuk melihat bagaimana tindakan rasisme direpresentasikan dalam film berjudul Antebellum. Penelitian ini menunjukkan ada lima jenis perilaku penolakan, namun Allport menyederhanakan menjadi tiga jenis, termasuk penolakan verbal, diskriminasi, dan serangan fisik. Selain itu, penelitian ini menggambarkan hasil respon-respon terhadap perilaku penolakan yang digambarkan oleh karakter orang kulit hitam setelah mengalami perilaku tersebut. Ada dua belas jenis respons terhadap perilaku penolakan, seperti kekhawatiran obsesif, penolakan keanggotaan, penarikan diri dan kepasifan, badut, kelicikan dan licik, kebencian diri, agresi terhadap diri sendiri, prasangka terhadap kelompok luar, simpati, perlawanan, peningkatan perjuangan, dan perjuangan status simbolis. Selain itu, analisis tanggapan juga didukung dengan teori karakterisasi oleh Petrie dan Boggs. Ada delapan metode karakterisasi, seperti penampilan, dialog, aksi eksternal, aksi internal, reaksi karakter lain, kontras, karikatur dan leitmotif, dan terakhir melalui pemilihan nama yang dilanjutkan dengan pendekatan mimetik karena karakter dalam film mewakili situasi kehidupan nyata. Dalam analisis, semua jenis perilaku penolakan terhadap karakter orang kulit hitam ditemukan dalam analisis. Tanggapan dari dua belas hanya menemukan empat, dan untuk metode karakterisasi hanya empat yang digunakan.
