The Woman Who Dreamt of Three Birds

Mistifying! I read the english version because I will put the review in my blog and the review will be in english. The book is available in Bahasa Indonesia too.

REVIEW
At the gist of it, The Woman Who Dreamt of Three Birds or Surti dan Tiga Sawunggaling is a historical fiction. Surti is a batik artist, her husband is a guerrila captain. Told in the 1940s when Dutch collonialism trying to put Indonesia back to its occupation, the story delved into the topics of war, grief, dreams, and disconnection.

What I like:
- Javanese mysticism and magical realism
The setting is in Java and its cultural aspect and mysticism is quite thick in this book. It's almost borderline horror. There is also Islamic mysticism in it. I like that this story is translated in english so international reader can find it and read more about Indonesian cultures.

- Short but meaningful
It's very short, only 100-ish pages! But it will leave strong impression. There are some underlying messages that I can't really articulate about but I felt it deeply. The mood of the story is bleak and grim, fitting with the tragedies happened throughout the story.

What I really dislike:
- The narration format is confusing
I read the digital version of this book in Gramedia Digital. I don't know if it's just the digital formatting or also occured in physical book, but the format is not really neat. No clear distinction between dialogues and narratives. It can make us confused who talk about what, what happened etc. I don't know whether it was intended by the author or not, but it disturb my immersion to the story.

CONCLUSION
If you can get passed the confusing formatting it's actually a great read and quite recommended!
